Furnaces come typically as gas, electric or oil powered and provide a home with warm air. Furnace heating efficiency is measured with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) percentage. Remember, a higher AFUE percentage indicates a more efficient furnace.
A gas furnace uses natural gas, although some models can be converted to utilize propane. An oil furnace uses heating oil. An electricity source is required to run the control systems, blower and some accessories.
How A Furnace Works
The fan motor in a furnace is responsible for pulling air from the home via the return air duct. Inside the furnace is a metal grid-like object called a heat exchanger. A flame heats the heat exchanger, and then the fan motor forces cool air from the home through the heat exchanger, thus warming it before sending it back into the ductwork.
